似たもの英単語の使い分け「green lightとthumbs up」
新聞の見出しなどでもよく見かけるgreen lightとthumbs upという表現。green lightは、計画に着手するなど、何かを始めるための許可という意味。和製英語の「OKが出る」「ゴーサインが出る」に近いニュアンスです。thumbs up は、何かに賛成したり、よいと思っている時のジェスチャーがそのまま表現されたことば。ちなみに逆はthumbs down。何かに賛成しない、よいと思わない、という意味です。
green lightとthumbs up/downの使い方の例
- a: When do you think you’ll be able to return to work?
b: Soon, I hope. I’m waiting for the green light from my doctor.
a:「いつ頃仕事に戻れると思う?」
b:「すぐだと思うよ。先生の許可を待ってるんだ。」 - The government has given Berlitz Pharmaceuticals the green light to begin production of their new drug, which has been shown to significantly improve pronunciation and increase vocabulary.
政府はベルリッツ製薬に、発音と語彙増強を著しく向上させる効果が見られる新薬の製造を承認した。 - As soon as we get a green light from the top brass, we’re going to start planning for our first company retreat.
上層部からの許可が下りればすぐに、初の社員旅行の計画を開始する。 - If this grant proposal gets a thumbs up, we’ll have all the funding we need for the next five years.
この素晴らしい提案がもし通れば、この先5年間で必要な資金をすべて得られるだろう。 - a: General Affairs gave the thumbs down to my suggestion that we allow pets in the office to improve morale.
b: That’s a shame. I thought it was a good idea.
a:「やる気を高めるためにオフィスにペットを連れてきて良いことにしようっていう私の提案、総務部がダメだって。」
b:「残念。いいアイディアだと思ったのに。」
