間違って使いやすい英単語・英会話表現「ビジネスチャンス」
“I thought it was a business chance.”は通じない?
現在の事業を始めた理由を話していて「これはビジネスチャンスだ、と思ったんです。」のつもりで“I thought it was a business chance.”と言ったら、英語ネイティブの相手は一瞬ポカン……何か違ったの?と思ったことがある方、いませんか。
“business opportunity”は、人や企業が、新しい事業を始めることによって利益を上げる機会のことです。日本語では“business opportunity”のことを「ビジネスチャンス」と言いますが、英語では一般に“business chance”という表現は使いませんのでご注意を。
“chance”も“opportunity”も「機会」「好機」と訳されますが、“chance”はより偶然性が高く、予想外だったり、驚くようなものといったニュアンスがあります。“opportunity”は、一生懸命努力すれば、志望する方向へ進む機会がある、というように、何らかの前提があって掴めるもの。だからビジネスの「好機」には“opportunity”が使われるのでしょう。
business opportunityの使い方の例
