間違って使いやすい英単語・英会話表現「celebrate」
「父の誕生日を祝う」や「結婚する友人を祝う」のように、日本語の「祝う」は出来事や特別な日などでも、人でも目的語にすることができます。しかし、英語のcelebrateは、birthday(誕生日)、holiday(祝日)、promotion(昇進)やその他の出来事のように、特別な日やイベントが目的語になります。celebrate a PERSONという使い方はしません。「人を祝う」と言う場合は、congratulateを使います。
congratulate/celebrateの使い方の例
- Last year we celebrated the Emperor’s birthday by visiting the Imperial Palace.
昨年は、皇居を訪れて天皇誕生日を祝った。) - a: How did your family celebrate Christmas when you were a child?
b: We went to church in the morning and then had a turkey dinner at my grandmother’s house early in the afternoon.
a:「子供の頃、家でクリスマスのお祝いってどうしてた?」
b:「朝から教会に行って、午後早めの時間からおばあちゃんの家でターキーのディナーを食べてたな。」) - a: Guess what? Susan’s going to have a baby! I’m going to be a father!
b: That’s great! Let’s celebrate. I’ll buy you a drink.
a:「何だと思う?スーザンがおめでたなんだって!俺、父親になるんだよ。」
b:「良かったな!お祝いしなきゃ。1杯おごるよ」 - If we can achieve our sales target this year, we must congratulate ourselves with a bottle of champagne.
今年売り上げ目標を達成できたら、シャンペンでお祝いしよう。 - a: Did you hear that Bob would be promoted to the manager position next month?
b: He should be congratulated by all member of the team.
a:「ボブが来月マネージャーに昇進するって聞いた?」
b:「チーム全員で彼をお祝いしないとね」 - We congratulate you on being selected for the final of the contest.
