間違って使いやすい英単語・英会話表現「besides」
besidesは、「それに加えて」という意味です。A besides Bで「Bに加えてAも」、つまりA+B全体が対象になります。
exceptと、否定的な表現や疑問文でのbesidesは、「それ以外に」という意味になります。A except B、A besides Bで「B以外はA」、つまりBは対象に入らないことになります。
ちなみに、besidesに良く似たbesideは、「～のそばに」という意味と「～をはずれて」というちょっと異なる意味を持ちます。例えば“beside oneself with joy”は「喜びに我を忘れて」という意味になります。
besidesとexceptの使い方の例
- Where have you traveled besides Europe?
ヨーロッパ以外にどこに行ったことがありますか。 - Besides owning a successful business, he’s also a skilled rock climber and a great cook.
ビジネスが成功している上に、彼は優れたロック・クライマーであり、素晴しいコックでもある。 - Besides beer, he doesn’t like any other alcoholic beverages.
彼はビール以外のお酒は好まない。 - I was so bored because there was nothing besides literature books at my grandparents’ house.
祖父母の家には文学作品の本しかなかったので、とても退屈だった。 - The store is open every day except Sundays and holidays.
その店は日曜と祝日以外は営業している。 - Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds except with their teacher’s permission.
